Best Launch Monitor for Your Budget: What Each Price Level Buys

The right launch monitor is the one that fits both your budget and your room, and the sticker price is only half the cost. Most monitors under $2,000 need a yearly plan to play virtual courses, so compare the first-year cost, not just the price tag. Here's what each budget buys, from a $499.99 Garmin R10 to a $25,995 Trackman 4, with every price read on the maker's or a retailer's page in October 2026.

Start with what you'll pay in year one

A launch monitor reads the club and the ball at impact and shows how far, how fast and which way the shot went. Hook it to a phone, a laptop or a projector and the shot flies across a range or a real course.

The price tag isn't the whole cost. Most monitors under $2,000 need a yearly plan before they'll play virtual courses. A few charge nothing extra. So the fair way to compare is what you pay in the first year.

Every price below was read on the maker's own store or a large retailer in October 2026. Sales come and go, so check the price on the day you buy.

Who this is for: the golfer who wants to practice at the range and play courses at home without a big build. The R10 and the MLM2PRO are the two names you'll hear most, and both work with GSPro.

The catch is space. The R10 sits behind the golfer, and PlayBetter recommends at least 14 feet of room depth for it. Our room size guide covers what fits where.

One note on SkyTrak: GSPro doesn't officially support it. If the golfer has his heart set on GSPro, choose from GSPro's list. Our GSPro cost guide has the full list.

At this level, the room usually gets designed around the monitor. That's where a builder earns their fee.

How to choose, in three questions

  1. How much room do you have? Monitors that sit behind the ball need more depth. Monitors that sit beside it or mount overhead fit shorter rooms. Measure first.
  2. Do you mind a yearly plan? If not, the R10 or MLM2PRO is the cheapest real start. If you do, look at the Square Golf, Mevo Gen2 or Mevo+.
  3. What software does he want? If it's GSPro, pick from GSPro's supported list and add the plan the monitor needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best launch monitor under $1,000?+

It depends on whether you want to pay a yearly plan. The Garmin Approach R10 ($499.99) needs Garmin Golf ($99.99 a year) for courses, so its first year is about $600. The Rapsodo MLM2PRO ($549.99) needs Premium ($199.99 a year), about $750. The Square Golf Home Edition ($699) charges no subscription. All three work with GSPro. Prices read October 2026.

Which launch monitors have no subscription?+

FlightScope says the Mevo Gen2 ($1,299) needs no subscription and comes with an 8-course E6 Connect bundle, and the Mevo+ (clearance $1,099) comes with a 12-course E6 license. Square Golf says its Home Edition ($699) and Omni ($1,599) charge no subscription fee. ProTee says the VX needs none either.

Is a $500 launch monitor good enough for a home simulator?+

For many golfers, yes, as a start. Budget monitors like the R10 and MLM2PRO play courses and work with GSPro. The trade-off is room: the R10 sits behind the ball, and PlayBetter recommends at least 14 feet of room depth for it. Higher-priced monitors that sit beside or above the ball fit shorter rooms and read more club data.

What do the expensive launch monitors give you?+

Mostly more club data, more accuracy indoors, and placement that fits a finished room, such as overhead mounting. Trackman iO starts at $13,995 plus $700 a year for Home software, and Foresight's GCQuad is $15,999. Builders often design the room around one of these.

Do I need a projector and a PC too?+

To play courses on a big screen, yes, or a TV or tablet for some monitors. GSPro needs a Windows PC with at least an RTX 3060-level graphics card. Many monitors also run on a phone or tablet app, which is the cheapest way to start.
